Filtration
When your ICP-OES or ICP-MS results depend on a clean sample, our DigiFILTERs, membranes, filter papers, and vacuum-powered manifolds enable a filtration step that won't introduce the kind of contamination it's supposed to remove. Built from ICP-MS grade materials with pore sizes from 0.2 µm to 10 µm, and manifolds that can filter up to twelve samples at once — more if connected in series — you'll get audit-ready results without the inconsistency and bottleneck of one-at-a-time, manual syringe filtration.
More info on Filtration
AnalytiChem's filtration range for ICP-OES and ICP-MS sample preparation includes DigiFILTERs, membranes, filter paper, and manifold, each designed to remove particulates from a digested sample before it reaches the instrument. Suspended solids in an unfiltered sample cause nebulizer clogging, unstable aerosol formation, and signal drift, and in several regulated methods, filtration is the step that determines whether a result can be reported as dissolved: EPA 3005A, for example, requires dissolved metals to be filtered through a 0.45 µm filter at the point of collection, before acidification, and ISO 17294 applies the same 0.45 µm boundary to ICP-MS water quality testing. Choosing the right filter format, membrane, and pore size for the governing method is central to keeping that result defensible under audit.
DigiFILTERs are available in two sizes, fitting 50 ml and 100 ml DigiTUBE™ digestion tubes to match different sample volumes, and in three membrane types, PTFE (also known by the trade name Teflon®), Metricel™, and glass fiber, across pore sizes from 0.2 µm to 10 µm, supporting methods such as EPA 200.8 and 6020B alongside EPA 3005A. Each DigiFILTER uses a dual-headed cap manufactured from ICP-MS grade, virgin polypropylene selected for low leachable metals, so filtration proceeds under vacuum in seconds, without the added contact point and operator-dependent pressure of a manual syringe filter.
The DigiFILTER manifold extends this efficiency to batch processing, available in four- and twelve-position configurations, with each DigiFILTER and DigiTUBE occupying its own isolated fluid path so multiple samples, including acid digestates prepared to methods such as EPA 3050B, can be filtered simultaneously without cross-contamination. Vacuum-assisted filtration replaces the variable manual pressure of syringe-based methods with a controlled, consistent process across every position. An updated slot design simplifies assembly, letting tubes and filters seat into place with less setup between batches. For laboratories processing larger batches, manifolds can be linked in series, extending the throughput gain rather than filtering tubes one at a time, and the manifold is designed to operate within a fume hood, reducing manual handling of acid-digested samples. A DigiFILTER Field Kit, comprising 0.45 µm DigiFILTERs and DigiTUBEs with a plastic syringe, extends the same filtration chemistry to sample collection in the field, ahead of transport to the laboratory.
Membrane selection follows the sample chemistry rather than a single default: PTFE combines chemical inertness with very low metal extractables and is the standard choice for acid-digested matrices, while Metricel and glass fiber suit lower-acidity samples or serve as a higher-flow prefiltration step ahead of a finer membrane. Matching pore size and material to the governing method, rather than defaulting to one combination for every sample type, is what keeps a laboratory's filtration step consistent across a batch and comparable with other laboratories reporting under the same program. AnalytiChem's DigiFILTER range is designed to work alongside our DigiTUBE digestion tubes, keeping materials chemistry consistent from digestion through filtration and dilution, with a single, documented supply chain a laboratory can point to under audit or client scrutiny.
